This is the first of a series of
newsletters from COHR featuring a selected Vacation
Rentals by Owner website. In this edition, we feature
VacationRealty, one of the newer additions to the COHR
listings. One unique feature that I like is the
Craiglist Ad Builder, which I have not seen yet on any
of the other vacation rentals by owner sites I've
looked at.

Welcome to the April 2006 COHR Newsletter!
Since our launch in January, the response to COHR has
been phenomenal, with literally thousands of vacation
rental owners visiting our web site.
We now have information listed on 75 different
US and
European Vacation Rental sites, with detailed
reviews of 13 different sites, including leading
sites such as VRBO and Cyberrentals.
Since our last newsletter, we have added reviews of
Holiday-Rentals.com,
Portside Promotions and
Villarenters.com. Our
reviews page includes real time Alexa Traffic
Rankings for all the sites we have reviewed, so that you
can easily compare the amount of visitor traffic going
to each of these sites.
Following on from our previous feature article on
Comparing Visitor Traffic on Vacation Rental Sites , our
latest comparison shows Findvacationrentals.com with
the highest average number of visitors per listing (107)
of the US vacation rentals sites we examined.
Click4HolidayHomes had the highest average of the
European sites, with an average of 186 visitors per
listing. We will continue to track this in the coming
months.
On the other hand, our visitor poll of “ “
indicates that Cyberrentals generates more bookings
than any other site for visitors to COHR. You can find
the poll (and cast your vote) by visiting our
US Vacation Rentals Sites page and scrolling to the
end of the page.
This month’s feature article is entitled
“Vacation Rentals by Owner Sites: Are
they Profitable?”
On
the face of it, it may seem like making money from a
”vacation rentals by owner” site is easy: all you have
to do is get 1,000 owners to sign up, each paying $100
per year, and you can generate an annual income of $100k
with almost no running costs, right? Using the framework
developed by Michael Porter to analyze industry
profitability, we have taken a look at the business of
running a vacation rentals site.

4. Alexa
Rankings
As
we head into the busy booking season, which sites
attract the most traffic? Assessing visitor traffic is
not an exact science, but Alexa traffic ranking give a
good indication of the visitors a Vacation Rentals site
is likely to attract.
We’ve compiled the Alexa rankings for US and European
sites as of Jan 9th 2006. It’s probably no
surprise that VRBO is the highest ranked site overall,
but it was a little surprising that Homelidays managed
to edge out Holiday-Rentals for the top European spot.
